From the very beginning of the project Dean and Gary were incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. They worked with us to design the style and finish that we wanted. EWI Process

External wall insulation is a key application for improving the thermal efficiency of your property. The boards, which come in four different types and many different thicknesses, cover the outside facade of your home with a stick and screw process. The insulation protects the original external skin of the building by thermally controlling the temperatures between the original external wall and the outside elements, by ensuring the wall stays at a modest temperature to the outside. This helps by reducing condensation spots between warm internal air and the internal walls. When warm air meets a cold wall in an unventilated area of a room, it will eventually turn to water vapour, and eventually turn into mould. Controlling the temperature of the outside facing walls internal will help with limiting this devastating outcome.

With good insulation and good ventilation throughout the property, excess heat from other intense heat sources will escape, ensuring heat can leave the property without condensing. Walls internally will now be regulated by the heat provided in the property and the insulation surrounding the walls, meaning there is little to no areas of the room that are cold enough to cause condensation, therefore giving a better living environment. This will all return to a healthier home and reduce your heating bills over the year.

There are other benefits such as improved sound insulation, whilst keeping the internal dimensions of the rooms the same throughout.

What to consider ...

First things first with our checklist

Check with your local council, whether you need permission to carry out external wall insulation in your area and your property. This could also cover conservation areas.
Some local authorities issues a certificate or planning permission for these works to be carried out and require stage progression photos and visits from them to warrant a certificate.
Check to see if you have room to apply an insulation board up against Windows, Doors and rooflines around the whole property.
Consider all pipe works will have to be removed and reinstated throughout the project. This is a great time to fix old to new, removing old unused pipes.
Consider your electrical fittings and their positioning. Installation of new points will need installing ahead of any EWI instal and meet new regulations.
Drainage will need checking on positioning of downpipes and soil stacks, when walls are moved forward.
Existing window cills and some door cills can be extended by applying an over cill in a specific colour. These are mainly aluminium powder coated pieces, stuck onto of the existing cill. There are variations of these to choose from, though if you are considering new windows and doors, please consider the thickness of the insulation you are applying.

EWI Process

Options for finishing across EWI systems are very simple.

Modified renders or coloured renders come in two types - These are polymer through coloured renders or multi layered silicone renders.
Monocouche is a polymer scraped render, through coloured in up 25 different colour shades, water repellant with great UV quality's - Finished to a thickness of 15mm and both hand and machine applied, these renders have a variety of finishes you can achieve from a scraped finish to a floated finish plus many other advanced options. The modified version of this product for applying over EWI is a much lighter version, full of fibres for extra support.
Multi layered systems have a much larger variety of colour choices, with custom shades available with plenty of notice. These vary in type, they come in 1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm and 3mm aggregated versions. Both in an Acrylic and silicone version, with the added option for a full silicone product. These renders are much thinner and more flexible.
Our other option is brick-slip tile as seen here, these are machine cut bricks to a 20mm slip, they include pistol cuts for corners and soldier courses and can be finished off with one of our manufacturers mortars in a variety of colour choices.
